Book Centerpieces

It's easy to turn your children's library (or your library from when you were a child) into cute and easy centerpieces. Take 6 to 8 children's books of different shapes and sizes and stack them. Take a strip of grosgrain ribbon (anywhere from 18" to 24" long) and tie it around the books, gift-style, with a big bow on top. Top your "book gift" with a baby rattle, pacifier, or baby shoes for added decoration. Old children's books also look beautiful tied wtih an organza ribbon or a piece of twine.

Do You Know Your Letters?

Mimic your first classroom by placing school-style alphabet letters (or numbers) around the top of the room in banner style. Or, for a more creative approach, make your own out of construction paper in blue or pink (or both). You could also add little sayings to each letter (like "Aa" is for Another diaper?, "Bb" is for Baby, etc.) for guests to read while they mingle.

Fresh Apple Placecards

The symbol of pleasing teacher, take apples and use them as placecards. Tie pink, blue, or yellow pieces of paper to apple stems with curly ribbon or twine; handwrite each guests' name on the card and set in the center of each place setting. You could also write "an apple a day keeps the doctor away" or "an apple for the mommy" on each card instead of a guest's name.
